The Indian constitution, which is the longest-written constitution in the world is the supreme guiding force, which helps us in running our vast country smoothly and effectively. Our country is governed by the constitution of India, which is the supreme law and above the parliament.

The constitution of India was effective from 26th January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act 1935 and after which, our country was known as the ‘Republic of India’. 26th January 1950 was the day, which marked the beginning of India as a secular and democratic country that was freed from British rule. Earlier the entire region was referred to as the ‘Dominion of India’ when the British ruled us.

After we got our independence on 15th August 1947, the drafting of the Indian constitution started and was completed on 26th January 1949.
